Jupiter uses VantageScore 4.0 when pulling and displaying borrower credit scores. VantageScore is a tri-bureau credit scoring model that uses credit information from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to calculate a score ranging from 300 to 850. Higher scores generally represent lower credit risk.
Important: For the VantageScore to be displayed on Jupiter loan officers must have this enabled on their credit provider account.
The VantageScore and Midscore will display after credit has been pulled.
The VantageScore will also be included in the disclosure documents
How is the VantageScore calculated?
VantageScore evaluates several areas of a borrower's credit history. Each factor has a different impact on the overall score:
Factor | Weight |
Payment history | 41% |
Depth of credit | 20% |
Credit utilization | 20% |
Recent credit | 11% |
Balances | 6% |
Available credit | 2% |
Payment history
Payment history has the greatest impact on VantageScore. Late or missed payments can negatively affect a borrower's score, with more recent and more severe delinquencies generally having a greater impact.
Depth of credit
This considers the age of the borrower's credit accounts, including their oldest, newest, and average account age. It also considers the borrower's mix of revolving and installment credit.
Credit utilization
Credit utilization considers how much of the borrower's available revolving credit is being used.
VantageScore 4.0 also incorporates historical credit utilization trends rather than looking only at the borrower's most recent reported utilization.
Recent credit
Recently opened accounts and hard credit inquiries are considered when calculating the score.
Note: VantageScore 4.0 places more emphasis on recent credit activity than VantageScore 3.0.
Balances and available credit
The model also considers the borrower's outstanding balances and the amount of revolving credit still available to them.
What are the VantageScore 4.0 score ranges?
VantageScore 4.0 uses the 300–850 credit score range:
Score | VantageScore credit tier |
781–850 | Superprime |
661–780 | Prime |
601–660 | Near prime |
300–600 | Subprime |
These ranges are VantageScore classifications and should not be interpreted as Jupiter lending or eligibility guidelines. Individual lenders determine their own credit requirements.
Why might a borrower's score be different from another credit score?
A borrower may have several different credit scores.
Scores can vary because:
Credit information may differ between Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
Not all creditors report information to all three bureaus.
Different credit scoring models may evaluate the same credit information differently.
The timing of when credit information is reported can affect the score.
For this reason, a VantageScore 4.0 score displayed in Jupiter may not match a score the borrower has received from another service or a score generated using a different credit scoring model.
What should I tell a borrower who has questions about their score?
Jupiter displays the credit information and VantageScore 4.0 score returned through the credit pull. Jupiter does not determine or modify the borrower's credit score.
If a borrower believes information on their credit report is incorrect, they should review the credit report and work directly with the applicable credit bureau to address any discrepancies.
