The EIN (Employer Identification Number) can be found in several standard places. Below are the most common ones.
1. IRS confirmation letter (CP 575)
This is the official letter the IRS issued when the EIN was assigned.
Most reliable source if they still have it.
2. Business tax filings
Federal tax returns (Form 1120, 1120-S, or 1065) list the EIN on the first page.
Payroll tax forms (941, 940, W-2/W-3) also include it.
3. Business bank documents
Bank account opening paperwork
Monthly bank statements or voided checks often show the EIN (full or partial).
4. Licensing & regulatory records
State mortgage regulator filings (e.g., NMLS records)
State business registration documents
Insurance policies (E&O insurance commonly lists the EIN).
5. Accounting / payroll provider
CPA, bookkeeper, or payroll service (ADP, Gusto, Paychex) will have it on file.
If the EIN is lost
You (or an authorized officer) can:
Call the IRS Business & Specialty Tax line: 1-800-829-4933
After identity verification, the IRS will re-confirm the EIN (they won’t email it).
Only authorized parties (owner, officer, CPA with POA) can retrieve them.
